Choosing the Right Stainless Steel Watch
Stainless steel watches are durable so it is important to find the right one. Stainless steel is an alloy which is made up of mainly iron, carbon, and 10.5% chromium. Like the other metals, stainless steel can withstand tough conditions. It doesn’t stain, rust, and corrode when it comes in contact with water. So, it is a popular watch among the watch lovers.
Sometimes while buying a stainless steel watch it can be a hectic task of determining the quality of the stainless steel. Some quality signs when buying watches are listed below.
Fake stainless steel
The fake stainless steels are replicas or knockoffs that are sold for cheap prices. These easily corrode, lose their color, and no processes are taken to ensure the composition of the material. They are alloy by name but no alloys are used which are normally used in the formation of the stainless steel.
Different Grades of Stainless Steel
Different grades of stainless steel are available with each grade-defining the composition of the metals, strength, and weaknesses of the metals.
201 – The lowest grade of stainless steel which is used in watches. It has very low resistance from rust and corrosion.
304L- This is one of the common grades of stainless steel. It has a high resistance that doesn’t rust and doesn’t corrode from the oxidizing acids but it corrodes when in contact with chloride solutions.
904L- Rolex uses the 904L grade of stainless steel. It has extremely high resistance towards corrosion.
316L- The 316L is used by luxury watchmakers. They are similar to the 304L with the exception that they have molybdenum which increases the resistance. It is also referred to as surgical or marine stainless steel due to wide applications in biomedical and marine environments.
When looking for a good quality watch, it is recommended to look for a watch of grade 304L.
